Cleanings & Prevention
Preventative dental care is the best way to keep your smile healthy and looking great for a lifetime. When you brush and floss routinely while maintaining your regular dental checkups, you have the best chance of preventing major and costly dental problems from occurring in the first place.
Regular dental checkups allow the team at Buck Family Dental to monitor the state of your oral health and catch any developing problems while they are small. Then we can treat it easily while keeping the natural structure of your teeth and smile intact. There isn't anything better than your natural healthy teeth, and we do all we can to help you keep them!
Complete preventative dental care includes a comprehensive list of services that are key to maintaining a healthy, confident, and beautiful smile!
Dental Exams & Cleanings
Our dental exams are comprehensive and thorough. Dr. Buck and the hygienist will examine your teeth and gums for any detection of early decay or periodontal disease. The examination includes:
- Examination of diagnostic x-rays (radiographs)
- Oral cancer screening
- Gum disease evaluation
- Examination of tooth decay
- Examination of existing restorations
Once the examination has been completed, one of our registered dental hygienists will perform a professional dental cleaning. Your hygienist will remove the buildup of plaque and tartar that is too sticky to be removed from normal brushing and flossing. Afterward, they will polish your teeth to give your smile a shiny and ultra clean look and feel.
Dental x-rays are an essential part of preventative dentistry. They provide Dr. Buck with valuable information that cannot be seen by the naked eye. The abnormalities that can go undetected without the use of x-rays are:
- Abscesses or cysts
- Bone loss
- Cancerous and non-cancerous tumors
- Decay between the teeth
- Developmental abnormalities
- Poor tooth and root positions
- Problems inside a tooth or below the gum line
Fluoride is a natural mineral found in various foods and water that helps to prevent tooth decay. Fluoride helps to strengthen tooth enamel, which in turn helps the enamel to resist decay. After an examination, we will apply a topical fluoride gel onto your teeth for added strength.
Preventative dental care relies mostly on you! Your Celina dentist Dr. Buck only sees you twice a year, so the work the rest of the time is all up to you. We recommend brushing your teeth at least twice a day with an ADA approved soft bristled toothbrush and toothpaste. If you want, a post-lunch brush can help keep your teeth clean throughout the day. Don't forget to floss either. Without flossing, you miss cleaning roughly 35% of the surface of your teeth! You can see why it's so important to floss every day along with brushing.
i-CAT® 3D Imaging
i-Cat 3D imaging techniques provide Dr. Buck with a detailed view of the mouth and skull. This is much more detailed than a dental x-rays because it shows a clear view of the bone structure, bone density, tissues, and nerves. The i-Cat scan also assists Dr. Buck in placing dental implants due to the fact that the placement is now much more accurate. Here is a list of the ways the i-Cat scan helps Dr. Buck:
- Assess the quality of the jawbone where the implant will be placed.
- Determine where nerves are located.
- Diagnose tumors and disease in the early stages.
- Measure the density of the jawbone where the implant will be placed.
- Pinpoint the most effective placement for implants, including the angle of best fit.
- Plan the complete surgical procedure in advance, from start to finish.
- Precisely decide on the appropriate size and type of implants.
- View exact orientation and position of each tooth.
- View impacted teeth.
Diagnodent is a tool that specializes in cavity detection. It's best to find and treat cavities when they are at their earliest stages to prevent damage. The caries that cause cavities can be extremely hard to detect in the early stages because they are so tiny, which is where Diagnodent comes into play! The Diagnodent tool scans the surface of your tooth to determine if any decay is present. If there is decay, Dr. Buck can take care of it and prevent it from becoming larger and potentially painful.
Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer is diagnosed more than 30,000 times each year. If detected early, the cure rate is extremely high and can be effectively treated without further developments. It's very important to have Dr. Buck examine your mouth, gums, lips, and tongue for any signs of abnormalities on a regular basis. This ensures that if any sign of cancer is present, it will be caught before it becomes a serious problem. The peace of mind after your screening is worth it!
VELscope® Oral Cancer Screening
VELscope® uses Fluorescence Visualization to expose any changes or abnormalities that might otherwise be missed by the naked eye. The hardest part of detecting oral cancer is that the symptoms can look very similar to a less serious problem, and has the potential to be misdiagnosed. The VELscope® gives Dr. Buck an important new and detailed insight on what is happening beneath the surface and exposes potential trouble areas.
A dental sealant is a thin layer of plastic that is applied to and coats the deep grooves of the molar. This thin layer of plastic will prevent decay from developing in the grooves where cavities are most likely to form. The sealant will protect the tooth for many years! We recommend putting a sealant on children and teenagers who are more likely to develop cavities.
